Only a few months ago we had the pleasure to review Bobby’s Back In Town – Live in these columns, the come-back record by painter Dub Brock A.K.A. piano playing singer Bobby Lounge. After a promising start some 25 years ago he suffered from CFS. Since he came back he enters the stage accompanied by his full time ,,nurse’’ gorgeous Gina Pontevecchio, his personal announcer and alleged biggest fan Prof. Calvin Tubbs, A.K.A. The Toastmaster, and an…iron lung. One wonders how much this is part of the show. What we wrote earlier goes for this record too: ,, He finds his inspiration in barrelhouse, but the blues, gospel and boogie woogie of New Orleans and the whole south is surely included in the package. Add to this that clear, powerful and flexible voice and his remarkable sense of humour…’’ Since his totally unexpected return at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest) in 2005, he seems to fare well as a musician. Somethin’s Wrong again has a typical drawing on the cover (probably the work of Bobby/Dub himself) and continues the style and approach of the live record. Five originals and four covers, amongst these Jesus On The Mainline, which doesn’t add much to the existing versions. In many songs he raises his voice a bit too often, like in the title tune and in I Don’t Care. Live this didn’t matter much, but in the studio one might expect a little more subtlety. Still, this is an entertaining set of songs, thanks to the dexterous piano playing and the smart lyrics. Tin Pan Alley success Oh Baby (E. Herbert-W. Russell, 1921) is a good tune to make acquaintance with Bobby Lounge. A solid knowledge of American English and of the US social world is desirable, like with Squirrelsquatch (wherein even ,,foreigners’’ like the Spiders of Mars, the monster of Loch Ness, the Dalai Lama and Patrice Lumumba take part in the parade!)
