Silvertone/Zomba artist and fivefold Grammy winner Buddy Guy has just brought out a new album. “Skin Deep” is the title and contains twelve beautiful tracks. You’re in for a whole 58 minutes of true “modern electric guitar blues”. Guy might already be at age of 78 but this isn’t noticeable in his temperamentful guitar playing, on the contrary! The man still plays and sings as he’s got the devil on his heels. Proof of this is in the opener ‘Best Damn Fool’. A funky blues song that because of a fantastic blazer section bursts with energy. That the modest work isn’t strange to him you can hear in the gorgeous ‘I Found Happiness’. You’ll hear emotion through and through and you’ll ask how deep the blues has a hold of him. “Skin Deep” is actually not a classic Buddy Guy album. Because in a lot of songs he’s got a few guests come in and they’re not of the least. In ‘Two Many Tears’ Buddy goes on tour with blues diva Susan Tedeschi, and after that he’s in duet with Eric Clapton in ‘Every Time I Sing The Blues’. Furthermore we find Robert Randolph (‘Out In The Woods’ and That’s My Home), the calm and at the same time the title track ‘Skin Deep’ (with Derek Trucks) and ‘Who’s Gonna Fill Those Shoes’ (Quinn Sullivan). According to Buddy it’s the blues that’s keeping him young and I believe him. His singing is still raw, he still lets the tears stream out of his guitar and his shows time and time again are dynamic and creative. Let’s hope we can enjoy this blues icon for a long time yet.
