Blueswuzln is an Austrian band, which was grounded in the late 80’s by Fred Gassner a.k.a. Mr. Blueswalker. Round 1990 Fred Hölzl joined the group and since then he is the driving force behind this company. Two previous CD’s were released; the first on was a duo effort with Sonny Terry/Brownie McGhee inspired material, the second CD was a blues/rock record, recorded with a band. On this third disc they play as a trio, with Fred Hölzl (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Georg Gruber (guitar, vocals) and Marianne Frühstückl (vocals, percussion, keyboards). With ‘Waiting For Sunrise’ they deliver a fresh sounding record, filled with blues and singer/ songwriter-like material with some jazz and reggae influences. A pleasant introduction to Austrian blues for me. Twelve diversified songs, eleven written by Fred Hölzl and one (‘Strange Sensation’) by Marianne Frühstückl. This last mentioned is a singer, who studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and also is active as a jazz singer. She has a very flexible voice and this gives this band vocal surplus value. There are no weak songs on this disc, my personal favorites for the moment are ‘Somewhere’ and ‘Mood For Love’, both reggae flavored, ‘Get Behind Me’, with a nice John Lee Hooker boogie rhythm and the beautiful ‘Holdin’ In My Arms’, which could come straight from a Stan Webb/Chicken Shack album. When I was listening to this music in my back garden a neighbor came asking what nice music I was playing. A relaxed and sunny CD and as far as I’m concerned I would like to see Blueswuzln in the Benelux someday soon.
