‘Under The Radar’ is the second album by Doug Jay which is released by the Crosscut label, and they are extremely happy with it as am I. A tremendous disc which is in my cd player for several days now and most likely for the next few days as well. As a guitar freak I’m coming up short on the solo’s, no record breaking guitar solo’s here, but funny enough I don’t miss them at all when I’m playing this cd once again. Tells me enough about the quality I guess. There still is more than enough guitar on this disc very well performed by a young Jimmy Reiter. A lot of other instruments take over like a piano and harp but most of all the saxo-phone but none of these are overdone, everything is in the right proportions with a convincing album as a result. Tracks like ‘If It’s Love’ and ‘Show Me The Way To Love You’ fire into your living room. The ballad ‘Without Love’ puts our feet back to the ground only to roll with ‘Don’t Want Your Love No More’ a New Orleans piano boogie like the ones that brought fame to Fats Domino. With fourteen tracks and a duration of little bit over fifty minutes every body gets what he/she wants. From blues to swing to soul, mainly based on the sounds of the ’40, ’50 and the ‘60’s, it’s all there. Not so surprisingly with a front man who has been around since the seventies and is surrounded with some fine musicians like the earlier mentioned young guitar player Jimmy Reiter, Dutch bass player Jasper Mortier and German drummer André Werkmeister. An international companionship that will be internationally recognized.
