While BlueBlot/Blunk! Gitarist Marty Townsend worked out his excellent cover band Road Runner it was Bassist Jan Meijers who set up the new soul-blues project named Bass Papa. We were not at all surprised to learn that Wilfried Brits was a part of this start because of his reputation and well-known entrepreneur gift who already proved his value by dealing with Kleptomania, Vaya Con Dios, Blue Blot, Sunny Side Up, Urban Trad and Admiral Freebee. Lots of ambition for the band, the occupation is a real "all stars" one: Larry (Laurence Putman) was the Blue Blot singer, guitarist en blues singer Mario Pesic is known from Camden/Axl Peleman, Steve'Dynamite' Wouters is the talented funky/rock/blues drummer coming from Last Call and other blues top men as guest, such as Niels Verheest (Whodads) on the keys and Larry (Nicolas Lefèvre) on the sax, complete the line-up. All went very fast for this band, maybe a bit too fast as the recents of their first appearance on BRBF Peer 2007 was with ups and downs notes. Not too worry it was considered as start-up defaults, soon to be health. And now they have there first CD. We understood that this Bass Papa recording is more regarded as a sort of bizz-card rather than being a full artistic statement. This is proved by their choice of 8 covers, some with the mystery track of Frankie Miller to please the many fans. There are only three originals on this new CD, nothing wrong about it, it's just a part of the growing situation into ones own music. Two songs from Tony Joe White, Larry's great performance of 'undercover agent' and the good swing feeling of 'Nothing I would not do', refer to their Blue Blot experience. 'Imagine' looks like being an easy choice but the remix gifs this classical its own sound. 'If you go' (Nighthawks) is a prove of the vocal and gitar play talent of Pesic. On the other hand, is 'Sneakin' Sally Trought the Alley' (Robert Palmer) a rather risky choice but Bass Papa is completing the job with a lot of flair. The handfull of own songs is fine and complete the CD with the great covers, possibly the 'Last Call' will get one of the band members back to memory lane. Arrangements, vocal, music, recording, it's all very fine… it's an impressive demonstration of what this Bass Papa can for fill and this with the certain fact of an extended grow in the future.
