Raisin' A Ruckus

Roomful Of Blues

It is a bit awkward to be writing a CD review with the knowledge that trumpet player Bob Enos from the band Roomful of Blues died on January 11 from a heart attack. Bob joined Roomful of Blues in 1981. His last album with Roomful of Blues, 'Raisin' a Ruckus', was recorded in the Sonalysts studios in Connecticut halfway through 2007. Roomful of Blues is a band which experienced many changes. Currently sax player Rich Lataille dominates; he's the only one from the original line-up, the slightly reduced but still spotlessly performing brass section. Dave Howard sings 'Every Dog Has Its Day', the opening song of the album, with enthusiasm. He has an energetic soul voice which we hear throughout the album. 'Big Mamou', 'Lower on Your List of Priorities', and 'Sweet Petite' are all ejoyable rock songs which make you want to dance. Dave Howard sings a duet with Bethie Vachon called 'While I Can', which is not one of my favourite tracks. I prefer that wonderful sound of New Orleans in the tracks 'I Would Be a Sinner', 'Solid Jam', and 'New Orleans'. During the slow blues track 'Black Night' we are able to sit and relax, listen to the splendid solo of guitarist Chris Vachon. You have to get used to the title track 'Raisin' a Ruckus', which is a distinctive old-fashioned jazz blues song. The brass section proves it knows this genre of music. A CD packed with steaming jump blues, rock, jazzblues and New Orleans influences. The group from Rhode Island has released a splendid album with a familiar sound to the fans. In the mean time, for someone who is not familiar with the group, it is the start of wanting to hear more of Roomful of Blues.
