Peace of Mind

Gail ‘Mojo’ Muldrow

Gail ‘Mojo’ Muldrow is an extreme talented female singer/guitarist from San Francisco, California. Blues music out of this so called Bay Area region is known by many as smooth and sophisticated, and therefore not much appreciated by lovers of the harder blues styles. But is this true? San Francisco is also the uncrowned capital of hippie culture and flower power after the “revolution” in the sixties. People from all places came to the city that is built on seven hills to live an open minded life in contradiction to the rest of the United States. Therefore is Bay Area music (including blues music) a melting pot of different styles, that breath the spirit of flower power. And that can be heard on ‘Peace of Mind’. With a slack line up with only bass, drums, guitar and harmonica, the album sounds like a live recording. It begins with a laidback shuffle and after that the songs go from blues to blues-rock to end in psychedelic rock. She must have had a reason for that. In the seventies Muldrow played on Sly Stone’s ‘High On You’ record and she was a band member in Graham Central Station. Nothing of these kinds of funky music can be heard on this album and says a lot of the versatility of this lady in my opinion. She must have had a clear vision on this project. Gail ‘Mojo’ Muldrow is an establishment in San Francisco, when will the rest of the world follow?
