“This is how Mississippi blues sounds in 2008”. You can read it in the information booklet of Boo Boo Davis’ most recent CD “Name Of The Game”. What started as a crazy idea became reality after a tour with Boo Boo in 2007. No base player, just Boo Boo’s voice and mouth organ, the accurate drum work of John Gerritse and the nevertheless blowing guitar lines of Boo Boo’s buddy Jan Mittendorp. The result is just so good. Dirty, fatty and greasy... are just a few word to describe it. Blues in all its’ essence, blues in all its’ simplicity. Take ‘Dirty Dog’, a song that, through its gripping character, grabs you straight by the balls. ‘I’m Coming Home is then again a typical Chicago-blues number. Think off Chester Burnett alias Howlin’ Wolf and you’ll understand what I mean. In fact, Boo Boo comes very close to the howling and growling of Chester. That pain and sorrow are not strangers to Boo Boo you can hear in the slow ‘Lonely All By Myself’. The title speaks like a book. Some of the numbers you can’t really class under the classic blues. Take for example, the sweaping ‘Who Stole the Booty’. This number is like hypnotism, a kind of Voodoo-sound, which could get you soon into a trance (especially after a few drinks). Boo Boo lived in St.Louis for a while, these adventures you can follow in the number ‘St. Louis Woman’. As for his kindness, his love for the blues and his immense enthusiasm “live on stage” I have come to appreciate Boo Boo. Who’s next?
