Live At Terra Blues

Jon Short is a 32 years old American, who bears a good-will for pre-war blues. For about ten years he’s busy to promote this form of blues by teaching it on public schools and by giving workshops and lectures. He also performs about 100-150 times a year, solo, as a duo or with his band The Barrelhouse Ramblers. In 2007 he visited Europe for the first time and played in Amsterdam amongst others places. This is the 8th CD since 2004 on which he can be heard. A live recording entitled ‘Live At Terra Blues, NYC’. I do believe it’s a live recording, although nowhere an audience is audible. Fourteen songs on this album, most of them pre-war blues songs indeed, although is some post-war country and blues material, with songs by Lightnin’ Hopkins, Hank Snow, Taj Mahal, Cowboy Jack Clement and Jimmy Rogers. The pre-war material contains of songs by Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Furry Lewis and Robert Johnson a/o. Fourteen song, which are lacking the fire and intensity of the original performers, but are performed very capable and sincere. Nowhere interaction with the audience or exuberance, but it still is good to hear younger musicians that play tribute to this kind of music and want to pass on this piece of American culture. No real climaxes, no weak spots neither. Well-played acoustic blues by a man with his guitar.
