We did it before, I mean making a review of a CD without having it. Eve Adams (Co-President and Music Coordinator) from ACM Records contacted me and asked if I was interested in giving some attention to Steve Johnson. Of course I want that! Nowadays technology makes things easier, I had the complete CD in no time on my harddisk. To be honest, I’m not really a bluesrockfan. But Steve has that little something, an added value. The sound on this CD is excellent, I mean a perfect balance between the used instruments on one hand, and the vocals on the other. Besides, Steve sings very well. He’s also a talented guitarist, either on the slide like in ‘Happy Song’ or ‘Wild Magnolia’, or shuffling in a lovely way in the Texas bluesrock tunes ‘Gone For Good’ and ‘Learn To Be Nice’. You might call it a Stevie Ray Vaughan sound with a personal touch. Very good! Finally, it’s not all Texas bluesrock on this CD, there’s also room for some “modern electric blues” like in ‘Rita Lynn’ where it all comes together: Steve’s fine singing, the backing vocals and some energetic harmonicawork. I also like very much the slowblues ‘Almost 4AM’ (instrumental), and the acoustic ‘Beer’ with a playfull description of the stuff Belgians like so much. In my humble opinion, I consider this guy as a candidate for every serious bluesfestival in the lowlands (and beyond).
