Beverly 'Guitar' Watkins may be seventy six her age has not stopped her from recording a new album! Her third CD 'Don't Mess With Miss Watkins' is produced by Mike Vernon (a.o. Chicken Shack, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green) and drummer/producer Ardie Dean. We’re counting twelve tracks on this album, of which the most are written by Watkins herself. 'Too Many Times' is a real good song with the piano and halfway the song a clear guitar solo. That same piano opens 'Miz Dr Feelgood', a nice swinging number. The inspiration for 'Late Bus Blues' comes straight from her own life in which she shows her great vocal power especially considering her age. The song 'Red Mama Blues' is six minutes thirty one seconds and the longest track on this disc, a lot of guitar work and splendid vocals. To my surprise I hear real brass players on 'Get Out On The Floor' . Strange because in the booklet there is no information about this. Maybe it’s a synthesizer we’re hearing? That is despite the smooth accompanying drums and bass a shame. My opinion about this album is positive, but when listening to this album I get a peculiar feeling. Almost all the tracks I listen to sound familiar to me. Guess what? After some research in my own collection I discover that this is a best of CD. From her two previous albums 'Back in Business' and "Guitar Watkins” they have recorded and / or remastered twelve tracks and compiled this album all over again. However for someone who is not familiar with Beverly Watkins work, this is the opportunity to get a splendid compilation record.
