Fairly recently I came in contact with singer-songwriter KniKi from Perth, Australia. Since she was a child she was gripped by music. When she was fourteen she had her first singing lesson and that would’ve been the start of a musical career. KNiKi isn’t limited to just one genre of music as her musical interest is too large for that. Next to her love for the blues, she also loves rock, hardrock, soul... she’s even touched by heavy metal.
Her first live performance she did when she was eighteen and this was a jazz version of ‘Walking After Midnight’. About two years later she started to write music with a friend. In the end they would start a small band but the gigs didn’t stretch further than KniKi’s front room. That’s when she decided to stop with it for a while... then to start up again a few years later because of her love for music. This resulted in a first album ‘Stained’, which came out in 2003.
An album in which she asked for help from gospel singer/songwriter Andy James Court. KniKi describes the album as follows: “It was a long journey where I was really not sure in which direction I was going as he was a gospel/pop artist so his influences are heard throughout the album. But at the end of the day I’m very proud of how it turned out. I have developed and grown very much since then and feel I have found my way back to my first love blues, jazz & rock.”
In 2008 she’s back with a new CD , titled ‘Just...’. This time with the help of John Meyer (John Meyers Blues Express). John, who takes care of the bass, is also co-producer of this CD. The result is as expected a mixture of rock, blues, jazzy, soul and similar styles. Not all numbers are to my liking but nevertheless it’ll be worth getting to know this charming lady. And there are plans for a third album!
