Exploring History Blues: Norton Buffalo

Ever heard from Sy Klopps? In case you didn't, don't worry, nobody will come after you. Sy Klopps was the alter ego from personal manager Herbie Herbert (60), a guy who started his career as a roadie with Carlos Santana; later he became his manager. He was also manager for Journey and Roxette (Aghrrr...). In the beginning of the nineties he transformed himself into a musician, calles a couple of friends and recorded a blues album. And a strong one! One of those friends was harmonica wizard Norton Buffalo, a true master on his instrument. And that's the man who stands in the spotlights today, at least, some of his memorable recordings. Just listen to the track "Fanny Mae" on the, somewhat hard to find, jewel "The Legendary Sy Klopps B.B.: Walter Ego" to know what I mean. Norton's solo on this track is really remarkable and make this album even better!

Norton Buffalo has left a legacy of noted harp solos for soundtracks and albums, including "Runaway" on Bonnie Raitt's "Sweet Forgiveness". He has also been a touring and recording member of the Steve Miller Band for more then 20 years and tours with his own band, The Knockouts. In 1991 he teamed up with blues slide guitarist Roy Rogers. Very nice results of this co-operation can be found on the acoustic cd "R&B". On their second album "Travellin' Tracks" they add a rhythm section and include some live selections, including K.C. Douglas' "Mercury Blues" and a studio recording of "Shake Your Moneymaker". No need to tell me that I have to shake something here, that happens in a complete natural way when listening to Sy Klopps. I even forget to have my favorite glass of brandy here. See ya next week guys, and let it shake!
