If I would be asked to resume a bio from Eddie C. Campbell in less then 25 words, I would write something like this: "Worked with Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush and Willie Dixon's Chicago Blues All Stars. After that, he went to Europe, later he returned to Chicago". Pronto.
Like always in this serie, It's not about bio's or facts, but about the albums of the blues guy (or girl) that you should have on your shelf. Enough choices in this case, but I think the following three will do:
The Blind Pig Records album "That's When I Know" is without any doubt one of the finest blues releases of the nineties. Packed with originals, it captures Campbell at his best, with a swinging band behind him, playing a funky rhythm. Campbell shows a vocal style that has undergone considerable growth. "King Of The Jungle" is a small masterpiece, recorded in the seventies. On this one, he's backed by fine bluesmen such as Carey & Lurrie Bell, Bob Stroger and Lafayette Leake. Last but not least, give a listen to "Baddest Cat In The Block", produced by John Stedman (JSP Records). It contains several remakes of classic blues tunes, including "She's 19 Years Old" and "The Same Thing" and captures Campbell breathing new life into some wellknown standards. Eddie is now 69 but still performs, recently even in the far Brazil (see videoclip below). The three mentioned records are still available, get yourself at least one of them! See ya'll next week guys.
